Most homeowners who come to us with a deck project have the same frustration - they want a space they can actually use without spending every other weekend sanding, staining, or replacing boards. Traditional wood looks great at first, but it fights you. Composite doesn't.

Here's what we put together for this Winston-Salem homeowner. The upper level is a fully screened porch with a ceiling fan, white railing, and clean trim work throughout. It's an enclosed outdoor room - protected from bugs, shaded from direct sun, and usable well into the evening. Below that, the underdeck space is wrapped in horizontal composite skirting with its own access door, turning what's usually wasted space into something functional.

The staircase is all composite too, and that's a detail worth calling out. A lot of builders will use composite on the deck surface and then cut corners with pressure-treated wood on the stairs. We don't do that. Keeping the same material throughout means the whole structure ages consistently and holds up the same way over time - no mismatched maintenance schedules, no one section looking worn while the rest looks new.

The composite skirting on the lower section does double duty. It gives the structure a finished, intentional look instead of just open framing underneath. And it creates usable storage space below the porch that stays dry and out of sight. That kind of detail makes the whole build feel complete rather than thrown together.

This is the kind of exterior renovation that actually changes how you use your home. Not just a surface upgrade - a real addition to the living space. If you've been thinking about a deck or porch addition, this is what thoughtful deck construction looks like when it's done right.
